NAATI CCL

The Credentialled Community Language (CCL) test is run by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters), Australia's national standards body for translators and interpreters. It assesses your ability to communicate at a community level between English and another language (a Language Other Than English, or LOTE) by interpreting two short pre-recorded dialogues back and forth. The CCL is not a professional interpreter or translator certification and is not an English-proficiency test — its sole migration purpose is to earn the 5 community-language points.

Why it matters

On the skilled-migration points test, Home Affairs awards 5 points for holding a credential for a community language at the level of the NAATI CCL test, applying to points-tested visas such as 189, 190 and 491. For many applicants who already speak a strong second language, the CCL is one of the easiest and cheapest 5 points to obtain and can lift an EOI over the invitation cut-off. Because GCC clients frequently speak Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tagalog, Malayalam, Persian/Dari, Bengali and more, it is highly relevant. These points are separate from and additional to English points — the CCL never satisfies the English requirement.

Roughly half of each dialogue is in English and half in the LOTE; you interpret each segment into the other language.

Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, for a total of 90.

It is not an English test — the most common misunderstanding; it does not satisfy the English-language visa requirement or earn English points.
Per-dialogue minimum — passing overall at 63 is not enough; you must also clear 29 in each dialogue, so a strong first dialogue cannot rescue a weak second one.
Interpreting skill is not the same as fluency — being bilingual is not sufficient; segment interpreting (memory, note-taking, register, terminology) must be practised in both directions.
Not every language is offered — confirm the client's language is on NAATI's current CCL list first.
The five-year credential validity must still sit within the visa application timeline.

Common Questions

Does the CCL count as an English test?

No. It is a community-language interpreting credential. It earns no English points and does not satisfy the English-language visa requirement — you still need IELTS, PTE or OET for that.
