Your Expression of Interest is where you compete for an invitation — we calculate every point, evidence every claim and keep you ranked at the top of the pool.
Overview
EOI Assistance
SkillSelect is the Department of Home Affairs' online system through which skilled-migration candidates lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI). An EOI is not a visa application — it is a self-assessed claim of your personal, educational and professional details that generates a points score and places you in a pool. Candidates are then invited to apply for a visa through periodic invitation rounds. A single account can hold active EOIs for subclasses 189, 190 and 491 at the same time.

Relevance
The SkillSelect EOI is the mandatory gateway to an invitation for the points-tested skilled visas — you cannot apply for a 189, 190 or 491 without first being invited from an EOI.
Why It Matters
Why it matters
For the points-tested subclasses, lodging an EOI and receiving an invitation is compulsory — there is no way to lodge a 189, 190 or 491 application without an invitation generated from SkillSelect. The EOI determines your ranking in the pool (by points, then date of effect), is where all points claims must later be substantiated with evidence, and is the mechanism state and territory governments use to find and nominate candidates for the 190 and 491.
Key Details
How ranking and invitations work
65 points is the minimum threshold to be eligible — but meeting 65 does not guarantee an invitation.
Candidates are ranked by total points, highest first, then by date of effect for tie-breaks.
State nomination boosts your score: +5 points for the 190 and +15 points for the 491.
Only the highest-ranked candidates are drawn from the top of the pool each round.
Invitation rounds for the 2025-26 program year have run on a roughly quarterly schedule.
A single account can hold active EOIs for the 189, 190 and 491 simultaneously.
Increasing your score resets the date of effect for that new score.
