CDR for Engineers

A Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is a structured set of documents you submit to Engineers Australia (EA) to prove your engineering knowledge, skills and experience meet the Australian competency standard for your occupational category. It is EA's Migration Skills Assessment pathway for applicants whose qualifications EA does not automatically recognise. A CDR comprises three Career Episodes, a Summary Statement that cross-references each competency element, a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) list, and a CV with supporting identity, qualification and English-test documents.

Why it matters

For engineers from countries not party to the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accords — and for non-accredited qualifications generally — the CDR is the only way to obtain a positive EA skills assessment, which is itself a precondition for the skilled subclasses (189, 190 and 491) and most employer-sponsored pathways. A flawed or plagiarised CDR can produce a negative outcome and, in serious cases, a 12-month or longer ban on re-applying to EA, derailing the entire migration plan.

How It Works

Your Step-by-Step Journey

Confirm whether your qualification is recognised under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord (or is Australian-accredited) — if so, the accredited-qualification pathway applies and no CDR is needed.

Match your qualification and experience to the correct EA category — Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Associate or Engineering Manager — and its Stage 1 Competency Standard.

Each ~1,000–2,500 words in the first person singular, focused on your personal engineering contribution, with numbered paragraphs for later cross-referencing.

Map every required competency element of your chosen category to the specific Career Episode paragraph numbers that demonstrate it.

A chronological CPD list (commonly about one page), plus CV, qualifications, identity documents and English-test result.

Submit via EA's online portal and pay the assessment fee, then respond promptly to any clarification requests.

Good to know

Plagiarism is treated with zero tolerance — EA uses detection software, and copied or AI-generated text can trigger rejection and a 12-month or longer ban.
Career Episodes must show your personal contribution, not team or company achievements — overuse of "we" is a red flag.
Claiming the wrong occupational category (e.g. Professional Engineer with a 3-year qualification) mismatches the Stage 1 competencies.
Summary Statement gaps — failing to evidence every required competency element invites clarification requests or a negative outcome.
Episodes that are too textbook-technical or too vague both fail — EA wants demonstrated competency, not a literature review.
