The ACRO police certificate — and when to order it
A UK police certificate is required if you lived in the UK for 12 months or more, cumulatively, after turning 16.
Australia requires the ACRO Police Certificate — a DBS certificate is not accepted for migration purposes.
ACRO states that processing can take up to 30 working days, so timing matters more than most applicants expect.
Certificates are treated as current for roughly 12 months, and re-entering the UK after issue can mean a new one is needed.
You do not have to be in the UK to apply — ACRO accepts overseas applications with a full 10-year address history.
Health examinations from the UK
Health examinations are carried out by panel physicians approved by the Australian government, not by your GP.
Appointments are arranged through the eMedical system, which links the results directly to your visa application.
Common components include a medical examination, chest X-ray, and blood or urine tests depending on your age and visa subclass.

Medicare under the UK reciprocal agreement
Australia and the UK have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement. UK residents visiting Australia may access medically necessary out-of-hospital care, treatment as a public patient in a public hospital, and some PBS prescription medicines. Cover starts the day you arrive and ends when your visa expires. Enrolment is through myGov, and you will need your British passport plus evidence of UK residence such as a GHIC card.
Tax residency and superannuation
Australia taxes residents on worldwide income, so most UK arrivals become Australian tax residents on arrival. Employer superannuation contributions are paid on top of your salary, and if you later leave Australia you may be able to claim your superannuation through the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment scheme.
