Coaching & Exam Prep
Every module above the line: we coach to the points threshold, not just to a pass, because one weak band can cost you 10 to 20 points.
Overview
IELTS Academic
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world's most widely recognised English-proficiency tests, jointly delivered by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The Academic version is for people who want to study at university level or who need English for professional registration — for example with the nursing board (AHPRA/NMBA), Engineers Australia or medical boards. Results are reported on a band scale from 0 to 9 in half-band increments, with a band for each of the four modules plus an overall band.

Relevance
Proves the English level your visa, points test and professional registration require — the Academic version is the one for study or licensure.
Why It Matters
Why it matters
For Australian skilled and many other visas, applicants must prove a minimum standard of English, and Home Affairs converts the IELTS band into a named English level. For the points-tested skilled visas (189, 190 and 491), Competent English is the usual minimum to apply (0 points), Proficient English adds 10 points, and Superior English adds 20 points — often decisive in a competitive pool. Levels are set by the lowest module score, not the overall band, so balance across all four matters. Academic is the version to use where a client also needs the result for study or professional registration.
Key Details
Score bands that matter
Functional English — 4.5 average overall (some partner and parent visas).
Vocational English — 5.0 in each module (some employer-sponsored streams).
Competent English — 6.0 in each module: the minimum to apply for GSM (0 points).
Proficient English — 7.0 in each module: +10 points.
Superior English — 8.0 in each module: +20 points.
Your level is set by the lowest module, not the overall band.
Half-band rounding applies only to the overall band, not to individual modules.

Your Step-by-Step Journey
Watch Out
Good to know
- Diagnose whether you need Academic or General Training based on your visa and registration goals.
- Target coaching to the points threshold — lifting every module to 7.0 for +10 or 8.0 for +20, not just to a pass.
- Module-specific coaching for Writing and Speaking, where GCC-based candidates most often lose half a band.
- Align test timing with your EOI and lodgement strategy so results stay inside validity windows.
