Coaching & Exam Prep

Every module above the line: we coach to the points threshold, not just to a pass, because one weak band can cost you 10 to 20 points.

Overview

IELTS Academic

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world's most widely recognised English-proficiency tests, jointly delivered by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The Academic version is for people who want to study at university level or who need English for professional registration — for example with the nursing board (AHPRA/NMBA), Engineers Australia or medical boards. Results are reported on a band scale from 0 to 9 in half-band increments, with a band for each of the four modules plus an overall band.

Why It Matters

Why it matters

For Australian skilled and many other visas, applicants must prove a minimum standard of English, and Home Affairs converts the IELTS band into a named English level. For the points-tested skilled visas (189, 190 and 491), Competent English is the usual minimum to apply (0 points), Proficient English adds 10 points, and Superior English adds 20 points — often decisive in a competitive pool. Levels are set by the lowest module score, not the overall band, so balance across all four matters. Academic is the version to use where a client also needs the result for study or professional registration.

Key Details

Score bands that matter

Functional English — 4.5 average overall (some partner and parent visas).

Vocational English — 5.0 in each module (some employer-sponsored streams).

Competent English — 6.0 in each module: the minimum to apply for GSM (0 points).

Proficient English — 7.0 in each module: +10 points.

Superior English — 8.0 in each module: +20 points.

Your level is set by the lowest module, not the overall band.

Half-band rounding applies only to the overall band, not to individual modules.

How It Works

Your Step-by-Step Journey

Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening (around 30 minutes) and Speaking (an 11 to 14 minute live interview) are identical to General Training.

Reading uses texts from books, journals and magazines; Writing Task 1 describes a graph, table or diagram, and Task 2 is a formal essay.

Available paper-based or computer-delivered; the Speaking interview is live either way.

Listening, Reading and Writing run in one sitting of roughly 2 hours 45 minutes; Speaking is on the same day or within a few days.

Computer-delivered results arrive in around 3 to 5 days; paper-based results in around 13 days.

Watch Out

Good to know

Per-module matters most — one weak band can drop you an entire English level and cost 10 to 20 points.
Universities and many professional bodies do not accept General Training; use Academic where study or registration is the goal.
Validity windows differ — the provider's 2-year validity and the visa 3-year acceptance window are not the same thing (always reverify the current rule).
Registration bodies set higher bars — AHPRA/NMBA nursing English requirements are stricter than Competent English and may require recent results across multiple sittings.
Half-band rounding applies only to the overall band, never to individual modules.
How CMG helps
  • Diagnose whether you need Academic or General Training based on your visa and registration goals.
  • Target coaching to the points threshold — lifting every module to 7.0 for +10 or 8.0 for +20, not just to a pass.
  • Module-specific coaching for Writing and Speaking, where GCC-based candidates most often lose half a band.
  • Align test timing with your EOI and lodgement strategy so results stay inside validity windows.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need Academic or General Training?

For migration points alone, Home Affairs accepts either. Use Academic where you also need the result for university study or professional registration such as nursing or engineering.
